This - and other Google data mining tactics - is why I no longer use Google as my search engine.

I've been noticing this myself over the last 3 months. Not so much tv ad related mind ,this has cleared up my thoughts on it.

I think the changes have effected a lot of different industries that would not expect. I'm a in house for a very niche medical recruitment company and now the new scientist is ranking above my site. I have to say I'm quite devastated. I don't think this is just about TV but general heavy branding. I'm never going have the budget be number 2 again it seems!

Excellent post, and I totally agree that this limits Google's usefulness as a product discovery search engine. It also completely changes the marketplace for content publishers who at this time are able to make a full time income from traffic received through organic search rankings. I wonder how many affiliate marketers and content publishers will start consolidating their online real estate under flagship "Network Brands" just to stay afloat?
